THE CATLIN GUIDE 2013: NEW ARTISTS IN THE UK is launched at the London Art Fair 2013, 16 January. It is an introduction to 40 of the most exciting new artists in the UK, selected from a six-month, nationwide survey by curator Justin Hammond. Now in its fourth year, Catlin is established as an essential reference for followers of contemporary art and the only publication to provide an authoritative overview of new art in the UK. Each artist profile details future exhibitions, projects and aspirations for the coming year. The book will be unveiled alongside work by a selection of the featured artists, with a limited number of free copies given away to visitors to The Catlin Guide stand on each day of the fair.
|Alex Ball, Paper, 2012|
Alex Ball is an accomplished young artist recently graduated from the Slade. He won the Catlin Prize in 2008, was selected for the Saatchi Gallery’s New Sensations 2012 and has work in collections including David Roberts Art Foundation and Zabludowicz Collection. Volume Magazine featured one of his works, oil on board of a surreal figure with a red ball for a head in our second issue published in 2007. Heavily influenced by the literature, Alex Ball’s intricate paintings and newer prints, evolve from a mixture of his own sketches, prose writings and grafted images from a personal archive of second
hand books and manuals. Suggestive of parables and allegories, Ball’s works result in a disjointed and lingering amalgamation of repetitive images and characters that oppose their original context.
